Joecephus “Skipp Coon” Martin is a rapper, filmmaker and cultural worker from South Jackson, Mississippi. Across projects including A Change Gon’ Come, women revolution tennis shoes, Sophomore Slump and the acclaimed Miles Garvey, Skipp has developed a distinct body of Southern liberation music that’s historically grounded, politically unsparing and deeply personal.

The artist’s work examines Black power, state violence, love, fatherhood, faith and freedom without flattening any of them into slogans. Dense lyricism, experimental production and an insistence on historical memory place his music within a longer tradition of Black Southern thought, resistance and cultural invention. His offering is hip-hop as archive, argument and testimony.

Releasing in August 2026, August: Radio Free Jafrica marks Skipp’s return after more than a decade between full-length albums. The album treats Mississippi as both subject and broadcast signal for what becomes possible when Black people remember clearly, tell the truth and refuse erasure.

Skipp’s broader creative practice includes documentary film, photography and multimedia storytelling for public agencies, advocacy organizations and community institutions. He is also a proud husband and father.
